How to Evaluate Queen Performance Without Guesswork

Learn a repeatable way to judge brood pattern, colony growth, temperament, and queen quality before deciding whether a hive truly needs requeening.

Judge the colony, not a single frame

A queen should be evaluated through the performance of the whole colony, not by her appearance or one attractive patch of brood. Begin with population trend, stored food, temperament, and the amount of brood appropriate for the season. A compact colony in early spring may be developing perfectly, while the same population in late May could signal a problem. Compare colonies in the same yard because weather, forage, management, and local genetics strongly influence what normal looks like.

Make observations on at least two inspections separated by a brood cycle before replacing a queen, unless the colony is queenless or clearly failing. A cold snap, nectar interruption, pesticide exposure, or temporary pollen shortage can reduce laying. Record the date, weather, brood area, eggs, food, and visible disease signs. Repeated evidence is more useful than memory, and it prevents an expensive requeening decision based on a temporary setback that the colony could correct itself.

Read brood pattern in context

Healthy worker brood is usually concentrated in a coherent oval, with older capped brood toward the center and progressively younger larvae and eggs around it. Empty cells are not automatically evidence of a poor queen. Newly emerged bees leave temporary openings, workers may remove diseased or mite-damaged brood, and nectar can interrupt the pattern during a flow. Look for eggs standing at the bottoms of cells and larvae receiving abundant white brood food before judging the laying pattern.

A persistently scattered pattern deserves investigation. Check whether capped cells are worker-sized or domed like drone brood, whether larvae look pearly and curled, and whether cells contain multiple eggs. Spotty brood may arise from an aging or poorly mated queen, but it can also reflect brood disease, high Varroa pressure, chilled brood, or contaminated comb. Requeening will not solve those conditions by itself. Diagnose the cause before assigning every irregular cell to queen failure.

Measure growth and productivity

A productive queen builds enough healthy workers to match upcoming forage without creating chronic crowding. Estimate frames covered with adult bees and frames containing brood at consistent intervals. The direction matters more than an exact number: a colony should expand during its normal buildup and contract as forage and daylight decline. A colony that remains small while neighboring colonies grow, despite adequate stores and comb space, has given you stronger evidence of weak queen performance.

Honey yield alone is a poor queen score because colony location, starting strength, swarm history, and management affect the harvest. Instead, separate useful traits in your records: spring buildup, winter survival, brood viability, swarming tendency, hygienic behavior, and surplus production. A queen whose colony produces slightly less honey but stays healthy, calm, and winter-efficient may be more valuable than a high-yield colony requiring constant intervention. Select for the complete system you want to manage.

Include temperament and health

Temperament is partly genetic and should be assessed under fair conditions. Smoke lightly, move steadily, and avoid rating a colony during thunderstorms, dearth, robbing, or immediately after disturbance. Note whether bees remain on the comb, whether guard pressure is manageable, and how far defensive behavior follows you. If one colony is consistently difficult while its neighbors are workable, requeening can improve safety after the old workers have been replaced by the new queen's daughters.

Queen quality and colony health are connected, but resistance is not immunity. Monitor Varroa with a validated method such as an alcohol wash or soapy-water wash, and inspect brood for disease. A strong-looking colony can carry damaging mite levels, while a hygienic colony may show a few open cells because workers are removing compromised pupae. Keep health measurements beside queen scores so that natural resistance, treatment effects, and simple neglect are not confused with one another.

Make a defensible decision

Requeen when several observations point in the same direction: chronically poor buildup, a failing brood pattern without disease, excessive defensiveness, undesirable swarming behavior, or a queen old enough that replacement fits your risk plan. Confirm that suitable weather, drones, and replacement queens are available. During a major nectar flow, changing queens can temporarily interrupt production; at other times, a planned brood break can support mite management. Timing should serve the apiary's wider goals.

Use a simple scorecard from one to five for brood pattern, population growth, temperament, health, and productivity, then add plain-language notes. Never breed from a colony merely because its queen is easy to find or visually impressive. Over several seasons, consistent records reveal which maternal lines actually perform in your climate. Queen evaluation then becomes a selection process grounded in evidence, allowing you to keep good queens longer and replace weak ones before they jeopardize winter survival or a crop.
