Recognize the High-Consumption Period
Late winter can be more precarious than midwinter because queens resume or expand laying, increasing the need for heat and food. Colonies that felt heavy earlier may lose weight rapidly while little forage is available. Track weight more frequently as local brood rearing resumes. A warm afternoon may permit cleansing flights, but blooming plants seen elsewhere do not guarantee enough nectar near the apiary.
Watch entrances for normal flight, pollen return, dead-bee removal, and staining. Pollen suggests brood activity but does not establish colony size or food sufficiency. Compare hives in the same yard and note which remain inactive during favorable conditions. Do not pry apart a cold brood nest to satisfy curiosity. Use external clues and wait for the temperature and wind window recommended by local experts.
Prevent Starvation at the Finish Line
Heft or weigh colonies with the same technique used earlier. If a hive is dangerously light, place appropriate emergency food where the cluster can reach it. In cold climates, syrup may add moisture or remain inaccessible; solid feed may be preferred. In milder regions, liquid feeding can be practical. Follow regional guidance rather than applying one recipe everywhere.
Check that feed remains usable and has not absorbed excessive water, molded, or become inaccessible above an empty space. Refill cleanly without exposing brood. Do not use unknown honey, brown sugar, or improvised supplements. Once natural forage becomes reliable, reassess rather than continuing emergency feed automatically. Supplemental stores protect against shortage but can also crowd brood space or enter honey supers if poorly timed.
Choose the First Brood-Nest Inspection Carefully
Select a calm mild day and prepare a short list: confirm eggs or young larvae, estimate brood and adult coverage, examine food, and look for disease. Keep frames over the box and close promptly if weather changes. It is unnecessary to locate the queen when fresh eggs show her recent presence. Return brood frames in their original order and orientation to preserve the colony's thermal organization.
A small brood patch can be normal at the start of expansion. Evaluate larval appearance and cappings rather than expecting summer-scale brood. If brood is scattered, check queen history, nutrition, Varroa, chilling, and disease. Suspected foulbrood requires containment and official advice before frames move. A late-winter colony weakened by mites cannot be repaired by stimulation alone, so include validated monitoring when conditions and population permit.
Avoid Expanding Too Early
Adding boxes on the first warm day can create more volume than bees can heat or defend. Match equipment to occupied frames and the local weather forecast. Colonies need space before congestion, but they also need adult coverage around developing brood. Drawn comb is immediately usable, while foundation depends on strong populations and incoming carbohydrate. Add each only when its benefit exceeds the thermal cost.
Protein supplements may stimulate brood where natural pollen is inadequate, but they can spoil or support small hive beetles. Feed small amounts that colonies consume promptly and stop if pests or waste increase. Brood stimulation must be paired with a forecast of future resources; otherwise, a cold snap creates more larvae than workers can warm. Keep the goal sustainable growth rather than the largest brood nest on one inspection date.
Learn from Winter Losses Safely
If a colony has died, close the entrance to prevent robbing and examine it when weather allows. Photograph cluster position, remaining stores, brood, debris, queen presence if found, and signs of moisture or pests. A cluster headfirst in cells can suggest starvation but is not definitive by itself. Mite fecal deposits, deformed wings, and small fall population can support a Varroa-related interpretation, especially when records show high counts.
Do not distribute equipment until brood disease is ruled out. Send samples through an appropriate diagnostic service when cause is unclear, and clean or freeze comb based on the identified risk and local guidance. Compare losses with fall mite results, queen age, food weight, and yard conditions. Honest diagnosis turns a winter loss into prevention for surviving colonies and avoids repeating the same assumptions next season.
For surviving colonies, clean spare equipment and make queen-source plans before the first major flow. Late-winter observations can identify which colonies may need conservative space and which are likely to expand rapidly. Do not use a strong colony as a donor until its brood and mite status are known. The transition to spring is a valuable moment to align equipment, health evidence, and realistic production goals.
