Confirm That Feeding Is Necessary
A nectar dearth is a period when flowers provide little incoming nectar even though colonies remain active. Reduced entrance traffic, bees investigating cracks, light hive weight, and empty cells around brood can indicate shortage. Open colonies only when conditions allow, and compare several hives because a weak foraging pattern can also reflect queen loss, disease, or pesticide exposure. Feeding should answer a documented need rather than follow a calendar automatically.
Estimate stores by lifting from the rear, inspecting outer frames, or using a scale consistently. Brood requires carbohydrates and protein, but colony needs differ with population, climate, and upcoming blooms. Leave adequate colony-owned honey whenever possible. Honey intended for harvest should not be contaminated with supplemental syrup, so remove market supers before feeding unless the feed label and local food rules explicitly support another practice.
Choose Feed for the Seasonal Goal
White granulated sugar dissolved in clean water is commonly used for emergency carbohydrate feeding. Spring-stimulation and fall-storage concentrations differ, and regional advice accounts for climate and equipment. Use a trusted extension recipe, measure accurately, and avoid brown sugar, molasses, confectioner's sugar with additives, or spoiled syrup. Never feed honey from unknown colonies because it can carry American foulbrood spores even when it tastes and smells normal.
Syrup supplies energy but does not reproduce the full nutritional profile of honey. It cannot correct a queen problem, severe disease, or an adult population too small to care for brood. During hot weather, colonies also need a safe water source. Review the reason for feeding at each inspection and stop when natural forage resumes or adequate stores are present. Endless stimulative feeding can expand brood beyond what later resources support.
Feed Inside the Hive and Minimize Odor
Internal feeders generally reduce access by neighboring bees compared with open feeding. Select a feeder that does not drown bees, fits the hive, and can be refilled with minimal exposure. Install it late in the day if regional practice recommends, fill without spilling, and wipe syrup from equipment and the ground. Do not leave comb, cappings, or containers outdoors; a small scent source can recruit hundreds of robbers.
Open feeding spreads food among unknown colonies, encourages drifting and fighting, and makes it difficult to know which hive receives nutrition. It can also facilitate pathogen movement. If community feeding is used under specialized local guidance, it still requires careful placement and monitoring, but targeted internal feeding is usually easier to control. Keep feeders clean, make batches that colonies can consume before fermentation, and discard syrup that smells sour or shows mold.
Recognize and Stop Robbing
Robbing looks chaotic rather than orderly: bees search box seams, wrestle at the entrance, and fly in rapid zigzags. Wax crumbs may accumulate as invaders tear open capped stores. Reduce the entrance to a size the colony can defend, cover exposed honey, stop inspections, and correct every spill. A robbing screen can help when installed properly. Avoid blocking ventilation or trapping returning residents during high heat.
Do not move an open, dripping hive through the apiary or spray bees with household chemicals. If attack is intense, seek local advice about temporarily covering or relocating the colony while preserving airflow. Check neighboring weak or queenless hives, which may be both targets and sources. Once behavior settles, reassess the affected colony's queen, population, and remaining stores. Repeated robbing often signals that hive volume exceeds its defensive workforce.
Monitor Results and Protect Honey Quality
Record the amount offered, amount consumed, colony weight, brood condition, and weather. Rapid consumption can mean need, leakage, or access by robbers, so verify feeder integrity. A colony that fails to take syrup may be too cold, queenless, sick, or already well supplied. Do not force feed into comb or assume more is always better. Adjust to actual colony response and expected natural forage.
End feeding with enough time for bees to process stores according to local winter guidance, and ensure no syrup is marketed as honey. Clean and dry feeders before storage so they do not attract ants, rodents, or wax moths. Dearth feeding works when it is quiet, measured, and temporary. The broader goal is to maintain sufficient reserves while preventing competition, pathogen exchange, and accidental adulteration of the crop.
Long-term dearth planning also includes apiary capacity. If every colony repeatedly needs large emergency inputs, the yard may contain more bees than surrounding forage can support during dry months. Consider reducing colony density, spreading hives among sites, or improving legal pollinator habitat with landowner cooperation. Feed remains an essential safety tool, but landscape and stocking decisions can reduce the frequency with which an emergency begins.
