Reading Brood Patterns to Evaluate Queen Performance

Learn what a healthy brood pattern reveals, when empty cells are normal, and how to distinguish queen problems from disease, nutrition, and colony stress.

A productive queen often lays a compact oval of same-age brood, but perfectly solid frames are not the only sign of health. Workers leave cells open for pollen and nectar, remove unhealthy larvae, and adjust brood area to food and temperature. Recently emerged adults also create temporary holes. Evaluate several frames, the ages present, colony population, season, and recent weather before labeling a pattern poor or blaming the queen.

Find eggs, larvae, and capped brood to confirm continuous laying across roughly three weeks of development. Eggs standing upright are recent, while older eggs lean before hatching. Multiple eggs can occur with a newly started queen or laying workers, and placement matters. A single inspection gives a snapshot; dated photographs and notes reveal whether the brood area is expanding, shrinking normally with season, or becoming progressively irregular.

Separate Queen Issues from Worker Decisions

A queen may have reduced sperm reserves, physical injury, advanced age, or inadequate mating, producing excessive drone brood or an inconsistent worker pattern. However, workers can limit her laying when nectar and pollen are scarce, the population cannot cover more brood, or comb is crowded with stores. Before replacing a queen, confirm adequate food, usable empty comb near the brood nest, appropriate hive volume, and enough healthy adults.

Look for the queen without keeping the brood nest open excessively, but eggs can confirm her recent presence. A supersedure cell may indicate workers are replacing her quietly, while emergency cells can follow sudden loss. Cell position alone is not a perfect diagnosis. If the colony is preparing to swarm, multiple charged cells and congestion may coexist with a strong queen. Management depends on the whole colony state, not just one cell.

Inspect Larvae and Cappings

Healthy larvae are moist, pearly white, and progressively larger in a regular sequence. Capped worker brood is usually even and slightly raised. Sunken, greasy, perforated, or discolored cappings deserve closer attention, as do twisted larvae, hard mummies, scales, or foul odors. Stop transferring frames when regulated brood disease is possible and contact an inspector. Requeening a diseased colony without diagnosis can delay essential containment.

A shotgun pattern may also result from inbreeding and diploid drone removal, chilled brood, Varroa-associated damage, pesticide exposure, or nutritional stress. Check mite levels with a validated adult-bee sample and review recent cold snaps or manipulations. Do not use a pin-kill test casually as a disease diagnosis; hygienic testing follows a standardized protocol and measures worker removal behavior. Diagnostic uncertainty is a reason to gather more evidence, not to improvise treatments.

Decide Whether to Requeen

Consider replacement when the queen consistently produces excessive drones in worker cells, fails to maintain brood despite good conditions, or the colony remains defensive or poorly productive for genetic reasons. Source a queen suited to local climate and management goals, and plan timing around availability, nectar conditions, and colony population. A colony with laying workers or no young brood may require a different introduction strategy than a routinely requeened hive.

Follow the queen supplier's introduction guidance and verify acceptance without releasing her prematurely. Inspect for competing queen cells and understand that workers can reject an unfamiliar queen. After acceptance, allow enough time for her eggs to become capped brood and for older worker brood to emerge. Judging the new pattern after only a few days is unfair. Record queen source, marking color, introduction date, and first confirmed eggs.

Use Brood Records as an Early-Warning Tool

During each suitable inspection, estimate frames of eggs, open brood, capped brood, food, and adult coverage. Note pattern quality with consistent terms or photographs. These simple records can show a brood break after swarming, a recovery after requeening, or a decline that precedes visible adult loss. Compare colonies in the same yard because shared weather and forage help distinguish colony-specific problems from seasonal change.

Brood pattern is a powerful indicator precisely because it integrates queen laying, worker care, nutrition, temperature control, disease, and genetics. It should trigger questions rather than deliver a single answer. A good evaluation combines development timing, larval appearance, mite data, colony resources, and follow-up. When signs suggest regulated disease or unexplained widespread mortality, involve qualified local professionals before moving comb or applying any medication.

A useful exercise is to sketch each brood frame on a simple grid and repeat the sketch one brood cycle later. The comparison separates temporary emergence holes from persistent failure and reveals whether the queen is expanding into newly available cells. Pair the drawing with notes about pollen, nectar, temperature, and adult coverage. This low-cost record often shows a trend that photographs taken at different angles can obscure.
