Why a Measured Mite Count Matters
Varroa destructor is present in most managed honey bee populations, but the risk is not simply whether mites exist. Risk rises with the proportion of adult bees carrying mites and with the viruses that mites can transmit. Colonies that look productive may still be approaching a damaging level, especially late in summer when the bee population begins to contract. A repeatable sample turns an invisible problem into information that can be compared over time.
An alcohol wash is widely used because it removes most phoretic mites from a known number of adult bees. It sacrifices the sampled bees, so it should be performed deliberately, but the colony-level benefit of an accurate result can be substantial. Visual checks, deformed-wing symptoms, and mites seen on adult bees usually appear too late to replace measurement. Monitoring should be part of routine management rather than a response only after a colony looks weak.
Collecting a Representative Sample
Choose a frame from the brood nest with many nurse-age bees, confirm that the queen is not on it, and shake or brush bees into a clean tub. Nurse bees are more likely than foragers to carry phoretic mites, making them a useful monitoring group. Measure about one-half cup of bees, commonly estimated as roughly 300 workers, into a purpose-made wash jar. Consistency matters more than pretending that every sample contains exactly the same number.
Avoid sampling the queen, and do not collect from the entrance where returning foragers can produce an unrepresentative count. If a colony is too small to spare a standard sample, seek local guidance about an appropriate alternative and interpret the result cautiously. Label the jar or record the hive number before moving to the next colony. Sampling several colonies across an apiary is better than assuming one hive represents every colony.
Washing, Counting, and Calculating
Cover the bees with the approved washing fluid, secure the screened basket, and agitate according to the equipment instructions. Gentle, thorough swirling for the recommended interval helps dislodge mites without splashing. Let the liquid drain into the counting chamber, then count the mites against a light background. A second wash can reveal whether the first technique was complete; consistently finding many additional mites means the agitation method needs improvement.
For a 300-bee sample, divide the mite count by three to estimate mites per 100 bees. Nine mites, for example, represent about three mites per 100 adult bees. If the sample size differs, calculate mites divided by estimated bees and multiply by 100. Record both the raw count and the percentage. A percentage is easier to compare, while the raw figures preserve enough detail to review how the estimate was produced.
Interpreting Results Responsibly
Action thresholds vary with season, climate, colony condition, local virus pressure, and extension recommendations. Do not treat one universal number as correct everywhere. Consult current guidance from your state or provincial apiculture program and consider a lower tolerance when winter bees are being raised. A rising trend can also justify attention before a formal threshold is crossed, particularly when neighboring colonies are collapsing and mite immigration is possible.
A high result should lead to a management decision, not an improvised chemical response. Consider brood status, honey supers, temperature limits, resistance concerns, and the label of any registered control. Use only products legal for honey bees in your location, follow the label exactly, and observe restrictions for harvestable honey. Nonchemical tools can support an integrated plan, but most do not replace monitoring or guarantee adequate control by themselves.
Confirming Control and Building Records
Measure again after the treatment or management interval specified by reliable local guidance. A completed application is not proof that mite pressure fell: temperature, application technique, brood coverage, reinvasion, or resistance can change the outcome. A post-action wash shows whether the colony is now below the locally appropriate level. If it is not, contact an extension specialist or experienced local mentor before choosing a compatible next step.
Keep a simple log with date, colony, sample method, estimated bee count, mites, percentage, brood condition, action taken, and follow-up result. Over several seasons, these records reveal which yards experience earlier increases and which management choices perform reliably. They also make decisions easier to explain and repeat. Accurate Varroa monitoring is not a one-time test; it is a feedback loop that protects colonies while reducing unnecessary or poorly timed interventions.
