Varroa is a colony-level management problem
Varroa destructor mites reproduce in capped brood and feed on developing and adult honey bees. They also contribute to transmission and amplification of damaging viruses. A colony can look populous and make honey while its mite population is rising, then decline later. Waiting for visible mites or deformed wings means relying on late, insensitive signs rather than measuring risk when more options may exist.
Mite pressure changes with brood amount, drifting, robbing, incoming swarms, treatment history, and season. One low result cannot protect the colony indefinitely, and neighboring colonies can exchange mites. Build monitoring into the annual calendar, with special attention before vulnerable winter bees are raised and after any control. Regional extension services and associations provide current timing and action guidance for local conditions.
Use a validated adult-bee sample
Alcohol or detergent washes are widely used to dislodge mites from a measured sample of adult bees, producing a count that can be expressed relative to the sample size. A sugar roll is another method but is more sensitive to humidity and technique. Sticky boards can track mite fall in some contexts, yet they do not substitute directly for a standardized adult-bee infestation estimate.
Sample nurse-aged bees from brood frames while making every effort to keep the queen out of the container. Use the recommended sample size and technique for the chosen method, count accurately, and write both mites and estimated bees. Some methods kill sampled bees, which is a real cost, but the resulting information can guide protection of the entire colony. Follow a trusted protocol rather than inventing shortcuts.
Interpret numbers with local guidance
Calculate infestation consistently, commonly as mites per one hundred sampled adult bees. Action levels vary with season, region, colony objective, and current research. Do not publish one permanent universal threshold in your records. Instead, note the source and date of the guidance used, because a number that triggers action late in summer may have different meaning during an earlier brood phase.
Sampling uncertainty matters. A small or poorly selected sample can miss a patchy infestation, and mites are distributed differently as brood conditions change. Compare results over time and across colonies without using the strongest hive as a proxy for the entire yard. If one colony is unexpectedly high, monitor the others rather than assuming the problem is isolated.
Choose controls within an integrated plan
Potential controls include cultural, mechanical, biotechnical, and registered chemical approaches. Their effectiveness depends on brood presence, temperature, dose, application, resistance, and colony configuration. Honey supers and harvest timing restrict some options. Always follow the current legally approved product label; advice from a video or old book never overrides it.
Rotating modes of action where appropriate, avoiding underdosing, and coordinating timing can help manage resistance, but no calendar treatment is guaranteed. Brood interruption, drone brood removal, hygienic stock, and screened components may contribute to an integrated program, yet each has limitations. The central principle remains measurement: use an action because data and guidance support it, not because the month arrived.
Verify and preserve the evidence
After a control, monitor again at the recommended interval. A product can fail because of resistance, temperature, expired material, application error, reinvasion, or an unexpectedly high starting population. Without a follow-up, failure remains hidden. Record product, lot if practical, start and removal dates, configuration, weather constraints, result before, and result after.
Keep apiary tools clean and avoid moving suspect brood among colonies. If virus symptoms, brood abnormalities, or unexplained decline persist despite mite management, consult an inspector or diagnostic resource. Good Varroa control is not a claim that a hive is mite-free. It is a documented cycle of measurement, proportionate action, label compliance, and verification repeated throughout the colony's changing year.
