Do Not Diagnose Nosema from Stains Alone
Brown spotting on the entrance or hive front is commonly called dysentery, a symptom associated with bees defecating inside or near the colony. Nosema is an infection of adult-bee digestive tissues caused by microsporidian parasites. The two can occur together, but they are not synonyms. A colony may carry Nosema without obvious spotting, and spotting may follow poor-quality feed, prolonged confinement, or other digestive stress without a heavy Nosema infection.
Because outward signs overlap, a sound investigation begins with colony history and laboratory evidence. Note weather, confinement duration, feed source, queen performance, population change, and whether bees are crawling or unable to fly. Check food and moisture conditions without exposing the cluster to harmful cold. If several colonies show unusual adult mortality or stains, contact a diagnostic laboratory or local apiary specialist for sampling instructions before deciding on a treatment.
Collect Samples That Answer the Question
Laboratories often request a defined number of adult bees collected from a specific hive location. Older foragers from the entrance can be useful for detecting Nosema, while dead bees accumulated on the ground may be too degraded or unrepresentative. Follow the chosen laboratory's directions for bee count, container, preservation, labeling, and shipping. Combining bees from different colonies hides variation and can prevent you from identifying which hive needs attention.
Microscopy can estimate spore presence and load, but species identification may require molecular testing. Spore counts also vary among bees and across seasons, so interpret results with symptoms, colony strength, and local expertise. A single number should not be treated as a prediction of colony survival. Keep a duplicate record of hive number, collection date, bee location, weather, and recent feeding or medication so results can be interpreted in context.
Reduce Moisture and Confinement Stress
Colonies need protection from rain and wind while still managing water vapor produced by respiration and ripening stores. Repair leaking covers, tilt or configure equipment according to regional practice, keep hives above wet ground, and provide appropriate upper insulation or ventilation for the local climate. More ventilation is not automatically better in winter; uncontrolled drafts can increase heat loss. Follow regional recommendations that balance moisture movement with cluster protection.
On warm winter days, healthy bees may take cleansing flights. Do not force activity by opening a cold hive or heating it unpredictably. Ensure the entrance is not blocked by dead bees, snow, or debris while maintaining any mouse guard. Place colonies where winter sun and drainage are favorable if practical. These measures support adult bees but do not prove or cure a specific infection, which is why population and diagnostic trends remain important.
Improve Feed and Equipment Hygiene
Provide adequate stores before winter and use appropriate supplemental feed only when colony weight and season indicate a need. Fermented syrup, contaminated feeders, and poorly stored supplements should be discarded. Feed recipes and concentrations vary by purpose and climate, so use trusted extension guidance rather than untested additives. Avoid feeding honey from unknown colonies because it can transmit brood-disease spores and other contaminants even when it looks wholesome.
Clean reusable feeders between colonies, limit drifting where practical, and avoid transferring soiled comb or frames from a sick hive into healthy colonies. Replace badly defecated or damaged equipment according to local sanitation recommendations. Household disinfectants or improvised fumigants can injure bees and contaminate wax. If a medicinal product is registered for Nosema management in your location, use it only under current legal and veterinary requirements and exactly according to the label.
Follow Colony Trends Through Spring
Evaluate whether the colony maintains adult population, raises a compact brood pattern, and uses food normally as flight conditions improve. A weak colony should also be checked for queen failure, Varroa, viruses, brood disease, and inadequate nutrition. Combining weak colonies without diagnosis can spread pathogens. If a colony cannot cover its brood, reducing excess space or seeking local help may be more appropriate than simply adding feed.
Record laboratory results and the conditions under which symptoms improved or worsened. Seasonal declines in spores or stains can occur, but apparent recovery does not establish the original cause. Retest when advised, especially for recurrent yard-level patterns. The practical goal is not to assign every stain a disease name; it is to gather defensible evidence, remove avoidable stress, prevent equipment-mediated spread, and respond with legal tools suited to the confirmed problem.
