Managing Wax Moths and Small Hive Beetles Without Harming Bees

Understand What These Pests Exploit

Greater and lesser wax moth larvae tunnel through comb, feeding on debris, cocoons, and other organic material rather than thriving on clean wax alone. Small hive beetle adults enter colonies, and their larvae can damage comb and ferment honey under favorable conditions. Strong colonies often police occupied comb, while weak, queenless, diseased, or oversized colonies leave areas unguarded. Heavy damage is therefore both a pest problem and a signal to investigate colony condition.

The two pests have different life cycles. Wax moth development can occur within stored equipment, especially in warm, dark spaces. Small hive beetle larvae leave the hive and pupate in soil, making yard conditions and colony defense relevant. Correct identification matters because webs and tunnels suggest wax moths, while slimy fermented comb and wandering beetle larvae point elsewhere. Local distribution also varies, so use regional extension references and inspectors when identification is uncertain.

Keep Live Colonies Defensible

Match the number of boxes to the adult population that can patrol them. Removing unused space from a declining colony can reduce hiding areas, but never crowd a healthy colony during a flow. Address queenlessness, Varroa, brood disease, starvation risk, and robbing rather than relying on traps alone. Healthy bees, adequate food, and a functional queen are the first line of defense because pests multiply fastest where workers cannot patrol comb.

Avoid leaving burr comb, cappings, or spilled syrup around the apiary. Repair leaking feeders and extract harvested supers promptly. Small hive beetle traps designed for occupied hives can supplement management, but they must be installed and serviced according to instructions so bees are not exposed to trap contents. Never place agricultural insecticide, household pest strips, or unregistered bait inside a colony. Follow every registered product label and local regulation exactly.

Protect Drawn Comb in Storage

Remove supers only when you can process and store them. Honey-wet equipment attracts pests, so return it to strong colonies briefly for cleanup where local robbing conditions permit, or follow a controlled drying method. Freeze comb at temperatures and durations recommended by regional authorities to kill moth stages, then seal it against reinfestation after it reaches safe storage condition. Freezing once does not protect comb that is later left open to adult moths.

Cold storage is highly effective where available. In colder climates, well-ventilated stacks exposed to light and freezing temperatures may discourage wax moths, while warm regions require more active protection. Paradichlorobenzene may be registered for stored empty comb in some jurisdictions but is not interchangeable with mothballs containing naphthalene and must never contaminate honey. Use only products specifically legal for beekeeping equipment, obey label ventilation periods, and confirm supers are safe before reuse.

Respond to Damaged Equipment

Separate infested boxes before larvae spread. Freeze salvageable frames according to authoritative guidance, scrape webbing and debris, and evaluate whether comb remains structurally sound. Severely slimed honey may be unsuitable for bees or people and should be discarded following local waste guidance. Do not feed fermented honey back to colonies. Clean box joints and frame rests where beetles hide, but avoid coatings or solvents that leave residues inside food-producing equipment.

Woodenware is often reusable after physical cleaning and appropriate pest control, while collapsed or heavily tunneled comb may not be worth saving. Render wax only in equipment designed for the task and manage fire and burn risks carefully. If brood disease could have contributed to colony weakness, do not distribute the equipment until that question is resolved. Pest cleanup should never become a route for spreading American foulbrood spores or other pathogens.

Prevent the Next Outbreak

Inspect storage monthly during warm periods, keep stacks off the floor, label the source colony, and rotate older brood comb according to a considered replacement plan. Maintain clean extraction spaces and remove cappings waste quickly. In beetle-prone areas, hard, sunny ground may reduce successful pupation compared with damp loose soil, but site changes cannot compensate for weak colonies. Avoid unapproved soil treatments near hives, forage, water, or people.

Record when damage begins, which colonies supplied the comb, storage temperature, and control used. Recurring wax moth problems often reveal a gap between super removal and secure storage, while repeated beetle slime can point to colony weakness or extraction delays. A prevention plan joins strong-colony management, clean handling, prompt freezing or cold storage, and lawful tools. It protects valuable drawn comb without creating chemical risks for bees, wax, or honey.
