A Seasonal Varroa IPM Calendar for Beekeepers

Build a season-by-season Varroa plan that combines monitoring, brood-aware timing, cultural controls, labeled treatments, and follow-up testing.

Start with Local Seasons, Not Fixed Dates

A useful Varroa calendar follows colony biology rather than a wall calendar copied from another climate. Mites reproduce under capped brood, so population growth accelerates as brood rearing expands. Nectar flows, winter-bee production, treatment temperature ranges, and broodless periods occur at different times across regions. Mark your major bloom, typical swarm period, harvest window, and first sustained cold on a local calendar, then place monitoring checkpoints around those biological events.

Integrated pest management begins with prevention and measurement, proceeds to actions proportionate to risk, and ends with verification. It does not mean avoiding all registered treatments or applying the same product every year. Resistant bee stock, drone-brood removal, splits, brood interruption, and apiary placement may reduce pressure, but each has costs and limitations. An effective plan combines tools without assuming any one measure will carry the colony through an entire season.

Spring: Establish the Baseline

During spring buildup, assess colony population, brood pattern, food reserves, and mite level once weather permits a responsible inspection. Colonies emerging from winter with elevated mites can become virus sources as brood expands. Sample nurse bees using a validated method and compare the percentage with current local thresholds. Record whether brood is mostly open, capped, or absent, because brood distribution affects both mite reproduction and the suitability of different control options.

Spring cultural controls can include removing capped drone brood before adults emerge, making well-planned splits, or using queens selected for hygienic traits. Drone brood removal must be scheduled reliably; forgotten frames become mite incubators. Splits should have adequate bees, food, and queen plans rather than being made solely to create a brood break. If a registered control is necessary, check temperature requirements and honey-super restrictions, and follow its label and local regulations exactly.

Summer: Watch the Ratio Change

After the main flow, a colony may still look large while its adult bee population begins to decline. Mite numbers can remain high, causing the infestation percentage to rise rapidly. Test promptly when harvestable supers are removed rather than waiting for visible injury. In areas with multiple flows, plan around actual super use. Treatments approved in one country, state, or season may not be approved in another, so current labels and extension guidance must govern selection.

Heat and brood abundance affect performance and colony safety for several registered products. Never improvise dose, placement, ventilation, or duration. Maintain water access and avoid unnecessary colony disruption during extreme temperatures. Continue watching for robbing and drifting, which can move mites from deteriorating colonies into healthier ones. If nearby managed or feral colonies collapse, an unexpected late-summer increase may reflect immigration even after earlier control appeared successful.

Fall: Protect the Winter-Bee Generation

Healthy long-lived workers must be raised before winter, making late-summer and fall mite control time-sensitive. Waiting until the last brood emerges can allow virus damage while winter bees are developing. Monitor before this generation is produced, act when locally recommended, and verify the result. A colony can have adequate honey and still fail if mites and associated viruses shorten worker lifespan. Food preparation and mite management should therefore proceed as parallel priorities.

As brood area shrinks, some controls become more effective because fewer mites are protected under cappings, while other products are constrained by low temperatures. Broodless windows may offer opportunities, but they should be confirmed rather than assumed from the month. Inspect only as weather permits, avoid chilling brood, and do not combine products unless labels and authoritative guidance explicitly allow it. Rotate effective modes of action when practical to reduce resistance selection.

Winter and Follow-Up: Learn from Outcomes

In broodless or nearly broodless climates, winter management may include a legally registered control appropriate to that condition, but application must still follow the exact label. In continuously brooding climates, periodic monitoring remains important. Dead-mite boards can provide supplementary information when opening colonies is undesirable, though they do not substitute cleanly for adult-bee infestation measurements. Do not expose colonies to cold merely to satisfy a rigid sampling date.

At season end, compare each colony's spring baseline, interventions, post-control checks, fall level, and winter outcome. Note queens, brood breaks, honey production, and any suspected reinvasion. This review turns separate tasks into an adaptive calendar for the next year. Contact local extension or provincial apiculture specialists when results conflict or controls fail. The central rhythm remains simple: measure, decide from local evidence, act lawfully, remeasure, and adjust.
