Winter Feeding Without Guessing: Stores, Syrup, and Emergency Feed

Measure the actual shortage
Feeding begins with an estimate of usable stores. Whole-hive weight, a scale on one side used consistently, or calibrated hefting is more informative than seeing one honey frame. Subtract known equipment weight when possible and compare with healthy local colonies. Requirements vary widely by climate, bee population, winter length, insulation, and brood rearing, so universal pound targets must be adapted locally.
Food location matters as much as total weight. A cluster can starve inches from honey during prolonged cold if it cannot cross an empty gap. During suitable fall weather, arrange capped stores above and adjacent to brood without dismantling the nest. In winter, emergency feed should sit directly over the cluster where rising warmth and bee movement provide access.
Use liquid feed in the proper window
Sugar syrup is useful while weather allows bees to take, invert, and evaporate it. Heavier fall syrup is commonly used to build stores, while lighter syrup is often associated with spring stimulation, but recipes and timing should follow regional guidance. Accurate ratios by weight or volume prevent confusion. Use clean food-grade sugar and water; do not feed spoiled, fermented, or unknown honey.
Internal feeders reduce robbing, yet every design must prevent drowning and leaks. Feed in portions the colony can process, keep entrances small, and clean spills immediately. Stop before cold creates persistent wet feed. Never feed syrup with marketable honey supers on unless the resulting product is excluded from sale and all relevant rules are followed.
Choose emergency solid feed carefully
Fondant, dry sugar, or prepared sugar bricks can supply carbohydrates when liquid feed is unsuitable. The best form depends on humidity, temperature, equipment space, and colony behavior. Commercial products should have known ingredients; some supplements contain components not intended for honey production or may add unnecessary ash. Follow reliable regional recipes rather than experimenting over a clustered colony.
Place solid feed above the cluster, not at a distant corner. Use a shim or rim that preserves bee space without creating a draft, and prevent condensation from soaking the feed uncontrollably. Replenish before it is exhausted. Emergency feed lacks the diverse components of honey and should not be presented as equal nutrition, but accessible carbohydrates can prevent starvation.
Handle protein and honey responsibly
Protein supplements may support brood rearing when natural pollen is absent, but stimulating brood in midwinter increases food consumption and cluster demand. Use them only with a specific regional objective and enough carbohydrate stores. Patties can attract small hive beetles in warmer areas and may dry or mold. Monitor rather than placing them by calendar.
Feeding honey carries disease and robbing risks. Use only honey from the colony or a source whose health history is trusted and that complies with movement rules. Never feed imported table honey or material associated with American foulbrood because spores can remain infectious for decades. Stored frames should be protected from pests and warmed only enough for safe handling.
Monitor through the full risk period
Colonies often consume stores fastest when brood rearing resumes before spring forage, making late winter and early spring dangerous. Check weight during weather that permits brief external work and watch forecasted cold after warm spells. Bees flying on one sunny day do not prove food is adequate. Maintain emergency supplies before storms make travel impossible.
Record feed type, amount, date, weight trend, and colony response. Compare spring remaining stores with estimates to improve next year's targets. If one colony consumes unusually fast, assess population, queen timing, robbing, and equipment rather than assuming all hives need the same ration. Measured feeding protects bees while reducing waste, moisture, and unnecessary labor.
