Start before winter bees are raised
Winter preparation begins while summer still feels active because the workers that carry a colony through cold months are raised weeks before frost. Their longevity depends on low virus pressure, adequate pollen, a functioning queen, and a colony large enough to care for brood. Waiting until leaves fall to address high Varroa levels means much of the winter generation may already be damaged.
Use local records to identify the period when brood contracts, dependable fall forage ends, syrup processing becomes difficult, and flight weather disappears. Work backward from those markers. A regional calendar is a starting point, but elevation, latitude, drought, and yard microclimate matter. Build deadlines with weather buffers rather than one last possible date.
Late summer health comes first
Sample Varroa with a validated wash at the appropriate regional time and choose legal controls based on count, temperature, brood, supers, and product label. Complete treatment early enough to protect developing winter bees and verify efficacy afterward. A colony can look populous while viruses shorten the lives of the very workers it needs for clustering.
Inspect brood for disease and evaluate queen performance. Small seasonal brood areas may be normal, but scattered worker brood, unexpected drone brood, or chronic supersedure deserves attention. Requeen while quality queens and acceptance weather remain, or combine units when recovery is unlikely. Confirm disease status before moving brood or joining colonies.
Build and position adequate stores
Estimate the winter food requirement from climate, colony size, equipment, and local experience. Weigh or heft colonies consistently rather than judging only visible top frames. Honey should be accessible above and beside the anticipated cluster, without large empty gaps. Correct major shortages early with suitable feed so bees can store and process it before cold limits evaporation.
Protect marketable honey from feeding and follow food regulations. Avoid filling every brood cell while the colony still needs to raise winter bees. As temperatures decline, liquid feed may become ineffective or unsafe; regional practices may shift to fondant, sugar bricks, or other emergency feed. These are insurance, not substitutes for timely fall stores.
Prepare equipment and site
Repair lids, boxes, bottoms, and stands before storms. Tilt or level equipment according to the hive design and local moisture strategy, keeping entrances free of water. Install mouse guards after flight has declined but before rodents enter, ensuring openings still provide ventilation and bee passage. Reduce entrances to match colony defense and limit robbing.
Secure hives against wind, livestock, bears, and snow load. Add windbreaks without creating damp shade or blocking winter sun. Insulation and wrapping should follow climate-tested methods and account for moisture, not merely add layers. Leave safe access for winter checks and emergency feed; a site unreachable after snow can turn a minor shortage into a loss.
Close with verification, not hope
On the final warm inspection, confirm queenright evidence, population, stores, mite follow-up, and equipment. Avoid dismantling the brood nest late. Record hive weight or a consistent heft rating and note feed placement. Remove unused equipment that creates excessive empty volume, while preserving enough stores. Clear entrances and ensure covers cannot lift.
During winter, observe entrances and weights on suitable days without breaking the cluster. Remove dead bees blocking small entrances and replenish emergency feed when monitoring shows need. Keep a log of weather and losses. Spring survival reflects decisions made across the previous season, and a timeline makes those decisions early enough for bees to complete the biological work.
